Children’s Holistic Development

A Proposal for a Play-Based Curriculum at Eden Vision II

Prepared by: EVCO Management | August, 2025

1. Executive Summary

Since 2023, Eden Vision II has successfully prepared children for primary school with a strong academic foundation. However, we’ve identified a critical gap: our curriculum primarily focuses on cognitive skills, neglecting a child’s physical, social, emotional, and moral development. This proposal outlines a vital shift to a **holistic, competence-based, and play-based curriculum** that is fully aligned with the Tanzanian pre-primary framework. Our goal is to maintain academic excellence while nurturing every aspect of a child’s growth. We aim for a phased implementation in the 2025 academic year with a budget of TZS 26,800,000 to invest in teacher training, learning resources, and facility upgrades. Your partnership will help us become a pioneering center of excellence in early childhood education in Arusha.

2. Background & Rationale

Our initial focus on reading, writing, and numeracy has yielded remarkable results. However, insights from external partners in 2024 sparked our awareness of the power of learning through play. A recent assessment revealed that while we cover 80% of intellectual development, we provide only minimal support for physical, social, emotional, and moral/spiritual development. We are shifting because a purely academic focus is insufficient. A holistic curriculum is a direct investment in a child’s character, emotional resilience, and social skills—all essential for success in school and beyond. This change is fully aligned with the Government of Tanzania’s endorsement of competence-based and play-based teaching.

3. Problem Statement

The current educational approach, with its narrow academic focus, leaves children lacking foundational skills in personal development. This creates an imbalance where critical domains—such as the ability to resolve conflicts, manage emotions, and show empathy—are underdeveloped. This gap severely limits a child’s potential to become a well-rounded, capable, and empathetic adult. We are committed to providing the full range of tools our students need for a successful and well-adjusted life.

4. Project Objectives

  • **Curriculum:** To develop and implement a progressive, integrated curriculum that systematically addresses all five domains of holistic development.
  • **Teacher Capacity:** To provide professional development and training for all teachers in play-based and competence-based methodologies by the end of Q3 2026.
  • **Environment:** To transform three classrooms and the outdoor space into stimulating learning environments by Q3 2025.
  • **Parent Engagement:** To establish an active parent-school partnership model that encourages parental involvement.
  • **Outcomes:** To achieve tangible progress in all five developmental domains for at least 90% of our students by the end of the 2026 academic year.

5. Proposed Program & Activities

Our program is built on “learning through play and experience” using the Tanzanian curriculum as a guide. It focuses on five core learning areas:

  • Language and Communication: Activities like storytelling with props, singing local songs, and “show and tell” sessions.
  • Early Numeracy and Logical Thinking: Hands-on counting games with natural items, sorting by color and size, and building with blocks.
  • Personal and Social Development: Structured role-playing games, practicing greetings, and engaging in group projects to foster cooperation.
  • Health, Environment, and Practical Life Skills: Daily handwashing, tidying the classroom, and planting a small school garden.
  • Creativity and Arts: Open-ended art sessions with found objects, creating music with homemade instruments, and using dance to express feelings.

6. Expected Outcomes & Impact

For the Children:

  • **Enhanced Primary School Readiness:** Children will be academically, socially, and emotionally prepared for Grade One.
  • **Holistic Development:** Children will develop critical life skills such as empathy, resilience, creativity, and a strong moral foundation.

For the School & Community:

  • **Model School:** Eden Vision II will become a respected center of excellence for holistic education in Arusha.
  • **Sustainable Model:** The new approach will create a low-cost, replicable educational model that can be shared with other schools.

7. Budget Summary

The total estimated budget to implement this project for the 2025/26 academic year is **TZS 26,800,000**.

Our Mission: Nurturing the Leaders of Tomorrow

At Eden Vision Community Organization (EVCO), our mission is to build a community of hope where every child has the foundation they need to thrive. We believe that investing in early childhood development is the most powerful way to create a brighter future, and our ECDE program is the heart of this vision. Our work is focused on creating a self-sufficient, sustainable system that prepares children not just for school, but for life.

Our ECDE Program: Holistic and Play-Based Learning

Our program is a strategic and vital transition from a traditional academic-only approach to a holistic, play-based curriculum that is fully aligned with the official Tanzanian pre-primary education framework. We’ve recognized that while a strong foundation in reading, writing, and numeracy is important, it is insufficient to prepare a child for the complexities of modern life.

Our new curriculum is designed to nurture the whole child by systematically addressing five key developmental domains:

  • Intellectual/Cognitive Development: We maintain a strong academic focus, ensuring children are well-prepared for primary school.
  • Physical Development: Through play and movement, children develop coordination, motor skills, and an understanding of a healthy lifestyle.
  • Social Development: Children learn how to make friends, share, cooperate, and resolve conflicts in a peaceful and constructive manner.
  • Emotional Development: We teach children to understand and manage their own feelings, as well as to develop empathy and compassion for others.
  • Moral/Spiritual Development: Children learn core values like honesty, respect, and responsibility, building a strong sense of character and self-worth.

By shifting to this intentional, play-based approach, we are creating a dynamic learning environment that sets a new standard for early childhood education in Arusha. We are becoming a model school that not only provides an excellent education but also nurtures happy, well-adjusted, and confident children.
